If you are designing a new garage, there are several details to consider. One of the biggest considerations is whether to choose a large double door or two single doors. This decision comes down to a matter of personal choice, lifestyle, and the amount of space you have available. You can usually find large double doors and two single doors for comparable price points, so in most cases the difference in cost is not really a deal breaker. Below are several important elements to take into consideration when choosing the best garage door for you.

Differences in Temperature
A large double door will allow more cold air to pass through than two single doors. Using a large double door tends to be a smart choice in hot climates, where allowing more cold air in might be a good thing. On the other hand, in colder climates, and especially if you will heat your garage, opting for two single doors can help keep your energy bills lower.

Possible Malfunctions
When you have just one garage door and it breaks, it could mean that all of your vehicles are stuck inside your garage. If you were to have two independently powered single doors and one of them breaks, at least you could still get one car out.

More Than Two Vehicles
If you have three compact cars, you might be able to fit them all within your garage space. You might also want to store two cars, plus another small vehicle — like an atv or snowmobile. If you think you might occasionally store more than two vehicles inside your garage, a large double door is a more convenient choice.

Garage Width
One of the biggest factors for choosing between different garage door options is the amount of space you have to work with. If you hope to park two cars in your garage, you’ll need a space that is at least 22 feet wide by 18 feet deep. A space this size would allow you to use two, 8 by 7 foot doors. If you have large cars that need 9 foot doors or larger, a 22 foot wide space simply won’t cut it. If you hope to install an access door on the front of your garage, you’ll need a space that is even wider.

To figure out how wide you need your doors to be, you should probably measure your vehicles. Don’t forget to allow extra space for car doors to open. In addition to the space needed for your vehicles, you will most likely want to use your garage for storage so it’s important to take that into consideration as well.
