How to Storm-Proof Your Garage Doors

If you live in an area that frequently experiences storms, you know how dangerous and destructive they can be. Though any section of your home could potentially be at risk, the garage is typically one of the most vulnerable.

Since the garage is usually one of the largest single spaces within a home, it is the most susceptible to damage caused by extreme winds. Additionally, if the garage is compromised during a storm, the rest of the house is likely to sustain damages as well, costing your family time and money. Here are some ways to fortify your garage door to prevent any future storm damage.

Replace your garage door with a more storm-resistant model. Shop around for a garage door that has an especially high impact rating. This means it will be able to withstand extremely high winds as well as any heavy debris blown around during a storm. Your city’s building codes will have more detailed information on the wind resistance level recommended for your area.

Prioritize garage door maintenance. Garage doors already tend to be vulnerable to storm conditions; any holes, cracks, or other breaches in your garage door will only increase the risk of the door getting blown out or sucked into the garage. Even dents or bent portions can weaken your door against high winds, heavy rain, and debris. When you check your garage door for breakage on a regular basis, you are more likely to be able to fix whatever is broken before the next big storm.

Reinforce your garage door with a bracing system. The majority of garage doors are only secured by tracks or hinges, which can be relatively easy for high winds to breach. A bracing system is made of strong, durable material that firmly anchors the garage door to the floor, walls, and hinges, further protecting it from storm conditions. Many homes in tornado and hurricane-prone areas utilize bracing systems for their reliable protection. You can likely install a bracing system yourself if you own the proper drills.

Make sure the windows are secured. If you live in an area that typically experiences storms, having a garage door with windows isn’t advisable in general. However, if replacing the garage door or replacing the windows with sturdier material isn’t an option, you can replace the window panes in the door with impact-resistant glass. Depending on the type of garage door, you may also be able to install shutters on the exterior to protect from debris.
