Although garage doors protect your home and your valuable assets, they are also vulnerable to damage. Whether your kids throw a basketball into the garage door or you bump it with your car, dents are never a pleasant sight to see.

Before you start worrying about the potential repair costs, you may be able to rectify the problem on your own. However, it depends on what material your garage door is made out of and how extensive the damages are.

Garage doors with severe damage will need garage door repairs conducted by your local experts.

Can Dents in a Garage Door Be Repaired

How Significant Is the Garage Door Damage?

First, check if the dent is localized or if the entire door panel is bent. For instance, an indentation caused by a tennis ball probably hasn’t caused much damage. On the other hand, if your teenager backed the car into the garage door, the entire panel is most likely bent. Furthermore, additional components may also be affected.

What Material Is the Garage Door Made Of?

Depending on what material your garage door is made with and the extent of the damage, a DIY job may be able to fix your dents. However, wooden garage doors that have been split will need maintenance from your local garage door experts.

Garage doors made out of aluminum or stainless steel may be repaired with the correct tools and methods.

Aluminum Garage Door Dent Repair

For minor dents and bumps, aluminum garage doors are the easiest to fix. Gather a bucket, a sponge, dish soap, a lighter, a can of compressed air, and tin foil.

Then, fill the bucket with warm water, add one drop of dish soap, and stir until it’s evenly distributed. Now, use your sponge and cleaning solution to scrub the dented area until all of the dirt is removed. After it’s clean, let the dent air dry.

Next, tape tinfoil over the dent. Then, light the lighter and hold the flame to the tinfoil for one minute so that the heat is distributed to the dented area.

Remove the foil and immediately fire your compressed air across the dented area. Thanks to the molecular structure of aluminum, the quick temperature change may cause the dent to reverse back to its original position.

Steel garage door dents are more complicated to repair and will require the help of your local professional garage door team at DBar Garage Doors.
