Always Park in the Garage. Here’s Why
Garages are designed to keep cars safe and running properly, but many Americans today prefer to use their garage as a storage space. If you find yourself in the latter category, you should consider clearing out some of those boxes and making some space for your vehicle.
Chances are you spent a good amount of money buying your car, and continue to spend on insurance, gas, and upkeep. Why shouldn’t you do everything in your power to keep it safe, running well, and looking great? We compiled five key reasons why you should park your car in a garage instead of on the street or in a driveway.
- It’s safer. This one is a no-brainer—parking in a garage puts an extra gate or heavy metal door between your car and potential vandals or thieves.
- You’ll avoid damage from the elements. Rain, snow, sleet, bird excrement, and other natural materials can not only make your car’s exterior dirty—they can damage your paint job with acidity over time. Additionally, falling branches or rocks from trees overhead could potentially create unsightly dents, cracks, or scratches.
- It’s good for the engine and coolant. Garages tend to keep cars at a comfortably warm temperature. Extreme heat or cold can mess with the lubrication of the engine as well as the temperature of the coolant. If your car has been kept in a garage, the heat/AC will start working faster than if the car has been kept outside.
- You might get an insurance break. Believe it or not, some car insurance companies will offer a lower policy to those who store their car in a garage. With all the other costs of vehicle ownership, finding ways to save some money is always a positive.
- It boosts resale value. If you keep your car outside, your car’s rate of depreciation in value is bound to be faster than if you kept it in a garage. The time may come when you want to sell your vehicle, and you’ll have much better luck making back some of the money you spent if your car has little to no elemental damage to the paint or superficial damages from other drivers on the street.
If you have access to a garage, there’s no good reason not to utilize it! If you don’t have a garage, be aware of the potential hazards wherever you keep your car and remember: regular detailing can help keep it looking nice.
