Weatherproofing isn’t always the most intuitive thing, especially when it comes to your garage door. However, with winter just around the corner in most of the country, it’s time to start thinking about weatherproofing in earnest.

Here are three tips to make your life a lot easier this winter.

Start Weatherproofing Your Garage Door With Insulation

A well-insulated garage will drastically improve the space’s climate and make it much easier to control. Lack of insulation is a significant reason garages lose a lot of heat, which can cost you a lot of money when your bill arrives. And even more frustrating? If your garage is too cold, you might not be able to get your car started.

It’s all preventable with some insulation and pre-planning. You can use garage door insulation kits if you want to take the DIY route. But if you have an older door, replacing your door and installing a pre-insulated model might be more cost-effective. Either way, this should be one of your first weatherproofing steps each year.

Use Weatherstripping

Vinyl weatherstripping around your garage door can keep the chill at bay, and it’s relatively easy to do yourself. The goal is to seal any gaps that could lead to heat loss.

If you aren’t a huge fan of extensive DIY projects, you could always stop at installing a bottom seal on your garage door. You’ll have to remove the current seal, but fortunately, that’s not too tricky to do compared to applying weatherstripping.

Ideally, you’d replace the door sweep and upgrade your weatherstripping, but even doing one can make a massive difference in your garage’s temperature.

Apply Caulk Sealant

Caulk sealant is vital for weatherproofing. You’ll use it to fill in any surface imperfections around doors or windows. Follow the perimeter of doors and windows with the caulk. Be careful not to caulk the door itself or underneath the windows.

Like weatherstripping, you can approach this in a few different ways. Most importantly, you’re using a caulk specifically for outdoor use. Look for products that contain acrylic, silicone, or polyurethane.
